The method of thin metal bending

The method of thin metal bending

How is thin metal processed? How is the method of thin metal bending used and applied to thin metals? Let’s delve into the following article to gain a better understanding of the thin metal bending method.

I. What is Thin Metal Bending?

“Thin metal bending” is an industrial process for producing thin metal components by bending or flexing metal sheets to create products that are thin, flexible, and adaptable for various applications.

This process typically involves the use of presses, metal bending machines, or specialized industrial equipment to apply force and temperature to metal sheets, making them pliable and able to be shaped into desired thin forms. Thin metal bending technology is commonly employed in manufacturing products such as conduits, machine casings, packaging, or electronic components.

Metal bending machines apply force to bend and shape metal sheets as required. Various materials can be used, including sheet steel, stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, and more.

II. Methods of Thin Metal Bending

There are several ways to classify metal folding methods. They can be categorized based on the shape of the bending product, such as edge folding, V-shaped folding, U-shaped folding, and so on. However, the most common classification is based on the contact ratio with the bending die, specifically:

1. Free Bending

This method involves folding thin metal sheets using a bending knife to press the blank into the die but not into the bending die. The edge of the metal sheet will be folded upwards, forming an angle when the bending knife goes down. The shape of the metal sheet’s angle depends on the pressure of the bending knife into the die. The deeper the pressure, the sharper the angle formed.

2. Coining

The coining method requires the bending knife to press the blank entirely into the die. There is no space between the bending knife, bending die, and the thin metal sheet.

The knife and die must precisely match to ensure each angle and shape is bent separately. When using this method, the formed angle of the product will be stabilized, eliminating any possibility of the bending angle rebounding.

3. Folding Edge

Folding edge is the process of bending and folding the edges of metal materials, such as box edges, cabinets, completely. This process aims to create parallel and fully pressed edges to increase rigidity and protect the detailed edges.

4. Bending Curve

The folding edge process is usually conducted in two steps: first, folding the metal sheet at a 30-degree angle, then placing the metal sheet on a folding machine with a flat die to press down. As a result, the 30-degree folded edges after pressing will be completely folded into one another.

Bending curve involves continuously folding metal sheets into a C-shaped form, often used to fold thin to very thin metal sheets. It’s a new metal folding technology with an integrated edge folding head in a machine structured in a C-shape. During the bending curve process, the metal surface moves up and down or in an elliptical form, known as folding.

Applications of processed metal folding products are prevalent in daily life, such as stainless steel furniture, kitchenware, partition frames, electrical cabinet casings, and more.

Products from folded metal sheets find extensive use across various sectors including electronics, telecommunications, energy, industry, healthcare, and military.
